What you need to know
![]() The best time to travel to Egypt is between the months of October and May. June, July, and August are the hottest times of the year and it can make it hard to enjoy the outdoor unconditioned funerary district. Remember to pack lots of water, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, an oversize hat, and a camera for the best experience.
Hatsheput's Funerary district is on the west bank of the Nile, opposite the city of Luxor, Egypt. There are several hotel options in Luxor to accommodate you during your stay. (Click here to see hotel options) Prices range from $6 American a night, to well above $200 American a night. Research which hotel has the best options for you, but our highest recommended hotel is Iberotel Luxor Hotel. It's right on the Nile and has beautiful views, with all your modern convinces. TripAdvisor finds flights starting at $1545 for a round trip. The trip takes at least 24hours depending on where you are coming from and which service you select. Plan for a long flight, bring lots of entertainment and necessary comfort aids. To get your entry visa into Egypt make sure your passport is at least valid for an additional six months. Americans can get their visa in most airports, or ports of entry. Once in Egypt we recommend you do not drink the tap water because it is highly chlorinated. If you are going to be in Egypt for a long time, and decide to drink the tap water it is not dangerous. However, it will likely taste badly to you, and may cause your stomach to become upset. As with any big tourist spot you have to be careful who you give your time to. Make sure the tour you choose is lead by certified Egyptologist for the best experience. Also watch out for petty scams. Examples "I need something translated" this is used to draw people into shops. "I am selling scarfs" the person is usually selling one scarf and uses it to hide hands to pick pockets. Luxor shop keepers are very well known for their "persistence" in getting you to buy something. It can be very similar to what you might experience at stands in an American mall. If you get hassled to much by a shop keeper use the phrase "No Hassle" and the shop keeper usually gets the idea. If the problem persists threaten to call the police and say "Your a hustler." This is of coarse a last resort, and things don't usually come to this. Keep in mind being polite is usually the best method. |
