Born to rule

Hatsheput was the daughter of Pharaoh Tuthmosis I and queen Aahmes. She was the favorite amongst 3 children and was well educated and versed in all the areas necessary to rule.
She was married to her half brother Tuthmose II and gave birth to their daughter Neferure. Tuthmose II died shortly after the birth of their daughter but had a son, Tuthmose III, with his lesser wife Iset before his death.
Rather than naming Tuthmose III Pharaoh or remarrying, she decided that she would name herself Pharaoh. This was unheard of, and while it was a general conception that females should not be Pharaoh there are no records of any major conflicts over her rule. This may because she was very clever in her methodology. She assured that everything she did was in her favor, and that her entire empire knew about it. She erected monuments and obelisks to show off her divine power as Pharaoh. She also claimed divine birth by Amon Ra to give her power legitimacy.
From our records she was a very successful Pharaoh that brought peace and prosperity to her empire, and she was well liked by her citizens. Her architect Senmut helped her make waves in the architectural world, and make glorifying sculptures of her to keep her people loyal and informed. Senmut was also believed to be the actual father of Neferue. They shared a close bond as student and tutor and are shown in many works of art together.

Death

After her death Tuthmose III finally took his place as "rightful" Pharaoh. Though we are not sure the exact reason he had all of Hatsheput's kartush(left) and images chiseled away and all but one of her obelisks destroyed. Doing his best to erase her rule. It is believed that it was perhaps a was of promoting himself, but no definite evidence has been found to support that theory.
What we can say is that despite the destruction of all her Kartush, obelisks, and divine images she is well remembered.
